OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Statsig, a prominent experimentation platform known for its A/B testing, feature flagging, and real-time decisioning tools.
With this acquisition, Vijaye Raji, founder and CEO of Statsig, will be joining OpenAI as the new CTO of Applications, reporting to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications.
Raji brings a wealth of experience to OpenAI, including his entrepreneurial vision from founding Statsig and a decade leading large-scale consumer engineering at Meta. In his new role, he will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, with responsibilities encompassing core systems and product lines, including infrastructure and integrity.
OpenAI to acquire Statsig in an all-stock deal valuing at about $1.1 billion based on OpenAI’s current valuation of $300 billion.
The acquisition of Statsig is a crucial component of OpenAI’s strategy to enhance its product development lifecycle. Statsig’s platform, which has already been utilized by OpenAI for its own experimentation, is lauded for enabling rapid experimentation, tight feedback loops, and data-informed decision-making.
Upon finalization of the acquisition, Statsig employees will transition to become OpenAI employees. Statsig will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office, serving its existing customer base. OpenAI plans a measured approach to any future integration to ensure continuity for current customers and allow the Statsig team to maintain focus on its core strengths.
Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, said, “Vijaye has a remarkable record of building new consumer and B2B products and systems at scale,” Simo stated. “He’s joining at a time when our models are opening entirely new ways to build, and his leadership will help turn that progress into safe applications that empower people with many new tools to improve their lives, help companies increase their impact and allow developers to build faster and better products.”
Vijaye Raji said, “Joining OpenAI as CTO of Applications is an extraordinary opportunity to bring my experience scaling consumer and enterprise products to a mission I deeply believe in: advancing AI in ways that are capable of solving hard problems, reliable, and truly beneficial to people everywhere.”
