After a slow 2023–2024, the pace of creating billion-dollar companies regained momentum. Notable new unicorns of 2025 included Ai.tech (the fastest to reach the milestone in just three years), Netradyne (AI-powered fleet safety), and Fireflies.ai. By late 2025, India reached a total of 125 unicorns with a combined valuation exceeding $366 billion.
The Year of “Reverse Flipping”
A major trend was startups relocating their headquarters back to India from overseas jurisdictions (like Singapore or the US) to prepare for domestic IPOs. High-profile companies that completed or initiated this “reverse flip” in 2025 included Razorpay, Meesho, Flipkart, and Zepto.
Historic Surge in Startup IPOs
The year saw 18 new-age tech startups enter the public markets, nearly doubling the count from previous years. Notable debuts included Swiggy, Ather Energy, Lenskart, and PhysicsWallah, signalling a shift from private valuation hype to public market accountability.
Deeptech and Defense Breakouts
For the first time, defense tech and hardware startups saw an unprecedented funding surge. Indian hardware startups, which historically struggled for capital, raised significant rounds in 2025, with Raphe mPhibr becoming the first defense tech startup to raise a “mega” funding round. Additionally, 10 Indian space-tech startups, including Skyroot and Agnikul, were named Global Tech Pioneers by the WEF.
Expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities
The ecosystem decentralized significantly, with the number of DPIIT-recognized startups crossing 1.8 lakh.
